A southern Thames tributary, rising from springs at the foot of the North Downs
the Wandle still runs above ground for a substantial amount of its course and
joins the Thames at Wandsworth.
Our interest in the Wandle is centered around its culverted sections in the Croydon
area of South London. After three trips taken to the Wandle we have explored all but the
smallest/non-man sized sections. Upstream the water has been diverted into a newer concrete box
culvert rendering the original Victorian tunnel redundant, even so at only four foot in height it's
a back-breaker and then some. Interesting, but very long and after a while the stooping does becomes tiresome.
