HOME UNDERGROUND EXCESS

Gargantua

Our first Canadian drain of our week draining extravaganza in Toronto, Ontario. We hung out pretty much the whole week with Dsankt of sleepycity.net who was also in town for the week, so this was the first time down Gargantua for all three of us. "Got everything?" "Yup! Let's Go!"

We had seen a few images from other drainers, namely Kowalski and Siologen, and so we knew something of what to expect. Well, after a long twin concrete box section with odd pillared joins we reached the start of the upstream rcp sections whos proportions surely granted this drain its title. The monster rcp stretched off ahead, occassionaly taking a smooth drawn out corner, being out in front and looking back as Stoop or Dsankt aproached a corner their torch light wrapped and curled around the curves creating huge shadows befitting of the monsterous pipe!

Equally as impressive were the occassions when you turned a corner to be blinded by natural light flooding in from above. A series of ceiling grilles situated on dry flood/run off beds cut into the rcp and the natural light and moisture had cultivated a rich green covering of algae and moss on the surrounding concrete. The end of our journey was at an upstream manhole cover where we exited into a public park, much to the bemusement of a young mother sitting on the bench opposite. As we passed the kit out and closed the cover behind us her young son looked on, likely more in wonderment than the confusion her expression conveyed. A long but fun drain.
