Baynards tunnel was the highest point (250ft above sea level) of the now long defunct Guildford to
Horsham branch line. The line operated from 1865 to 1965, ceasing operation following a sharp
decrease in useage due to increase in road travel. Today one end of the tunnel has been back filled
whilst the other has been bricked and barred up, it is now the exclusive domain of local bats. At 380
Yards long it is not much more than a long straight tunnel with several niches on either side. Located
in the middle of dense woodland it's quite a surprise to stumble across if you're not aware of its
existence. Other than its secured end the only other sign of its existence is an old breather shaft
at its back filled end which protrudes about 12Ft from the woodland floor.
